On Thursday, 21 January, 1971, Jacob Amuta Onogwu enrolled at Government Secondary School, Otukpo, with a simple but firm resolve to work hard and be counted as one of the best students of his set. Very quietly, he also nursed the ambition of becoming not only the first university graduate from his sereneand innocent Ocheje-Oko, Orokam village, but also, to fundamentally affect his generation. As God would have it, in addition to the privilege of serving as the Prefect of Ogbuloko House, Jacob completed hissecondary education in June, 1975, as one of the best two graduating students, the first being Professor Ioraver Tsegba, now of blessed memory.
Three months hence, Pastor Jacob Onogwu was at the then Jos Campus of the University of Ibadan for a four-year degree program. Following his graduation from the Ibadan main Campus in July, 1979, with a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) Degree in Political Science and completion of the mandatory National Service, he joined the administrative cadre of the Benue State Civil Service where he served for years and in different capacities, including as the Administrative Secretary, Governor’s Liaison Office, Bassa Local Government Area and as the Executive Secretary, Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board.
Not only was he reputed for instituting a solid administrative infrastructure at the Pilgrims Board, he successfully conducted about seven pilgrimage operations. The crowning glory of his tenure was thespecial commendation he received from the Office of Pilgrims Affairs, the Presidency, Abuja in April,1997 for the seamless conduct of the year’s operations.
While in the Benue State Civil Service, Pastor Onogwu was availed a study facility which he utilized to earn a Master of Public Administration (MPA) Degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1989.Furthermore, he was admitted into full Membership of the Nigerian Institute of Management (MNIM) in November, 1993. Just before stepping out into the international service, he had risen to the substantiverank of the Director of Administration at the Benue State Judiciary, Makurdi.
For Jacob Onogwu, 1999 presented a unique window of opportunity to enable him serve humanity at theinternational level. Over the next twenty years, he held out at the Economic Community of West AfricanStates (ECOWAS), initially as Head of Section, Administration at the Commission in Abuja, and laterat the ECOWAS Parliament, Abuja, in the capacity of the Head of the Administration Division. During this period, he made massive contributions to the West African integration process through assisting in policy formulation and execution, organization of statutory meetings and drafting communiques ofSummits of Heads of State and Government. Even after having bowed out of the Community in pomp and pageantry nearly five years ago, he still serves the regional body occasionally in consultancy roles, being a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) and a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants of Nigeria (FIMC).
Following from his passion for the things of God and after the requisite training, Jacob Onogwu was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Bible Life Ministry, Nyanya, Abuja, in 2002. He is still very much in the business of serving God as a part-time Pastor.
Pastor Onogwu takes an uncanny delight in helping people, particularly the under-privileged members ofthe society. It was against this background he took it upon himself to sponsor the education of legions of children who now occupy various important positions in the community.
Pastor Jacob Amuta Onogwu is who he is, not on account on any sterling or exceptional qualities, but by the sheer grace of God. While not in any way discountenancing the role of the family up-bringing, the fact remains that it all started in Government Secondary School, Otukpo, with the inculcation of the invaluable ethos of “Discipline & Service”. Even with all the quantum of the water that had passed under the bridge all of these years, the watch- words, for him, have always been “Discipline & Service”, along with thetimeless declaration of Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:12, “All things are possible for me, but not everything is beneficial”.
May God continue to uphold Government Secondary School, Otukpo, even in her metamorphosis.
