BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

Established in May 1967, Government Secondary School, Otukpo began at a temporary location in Otobi, occupying the premises of the former Idoma Native Authority Primary School. Initially named Government Secondary School, Otobi, the institution relocated on April 3, 1970, to its current location in Otukpo, taking over the site of the former Clerical School and becoming known as Government Secondary School, Otukpo. In its 56 years, the college has graduated 54 classes and been led by 32 principals. The school motto, “Discipline and Service,” has been a guiding principle, fostering academic and athletic excellence among students.

On September 14, 1998, the Benue State Government designated the school as a Model Secondary School for Zone C, renaming it Government Model Secondary School, Otukpo, with the late Mr. S.S. Idoko as its principal. However, on March 6, 2019, at the request of the then Executive Council of the Alumni Association, OGSSOBA, under the leadership of Barrister Paul Edeh, the name was reverted to Government Secondary School, Otukpo.

In 2021, the Benue State Teaching Service Board (TSB) introduced an assessment to evaluate the school’s premises and facilities in preparation for its selection for the World Bank-funded IDEAS Project, aimed at enhancing educational resources. In a letter dated March 23, 2021 (Ref. No. BN/TSB/45/I/XX), Dr. Frank A. Kyungun, the TSB Executive Secretary, invited the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Science and Technical Education Board (STEB) to conduct an on-site assessment.

On November 7, 2022, an agreement was formalized by the Benue State Ministry of Education, implementing a Technical College Institutional Development Plan under the IDEAS Project. Subsequently, on November 28, 2022, the school transitioned from the Benue State Teaching Service Board to the Benue State Science and Technical Education Board. This change led to the current name, Government Science and Technical College, Otukpo, and marked the school’s inclusion of female students as part of the World Bank’s initiative to support skill acquisition for both male and female students.

The current Executive Council of the Alumni Association, OGSSOBA, under the leadership of Pastor Elijah Salifu is committed to restoring the historical identity of the institution and implementing forward-thinking strategies to ensure their alma mater thrives in a rapidly changing world.
